About

About Surf Buddy

What is Surf Buddy?

Surf Buddy is a windsurfing app and platform for tracking sessions, understanding progress, choosing and managing gear, discovering spots, finding coaching and connecting with the community.

The main experience lives in the app, while selected features such as spot guides, leaderboards and upcoming clinics will also be available on the web.

Who is Surf Buddy for?

Surf Buddy is designed for everyone from complete beginners to professional athletes. Its strongest focus is on making everyday windsurfing decisions easier, helping riders progress and keeping the experience motivating and fun.

Windsurfing and windfoiling are at the center of Surf Buddy, although sessions from other water sports can also be recorded or imported. Some specialized tools, such as the gear calculator and trim helper, are specifically designed for windsurfing.

Is Surf Buddy a native app, and how is it being built?

Yes. Surf Buddy is being developed as a native app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, not as a website placed inside an app wrapper.

Building it natively allows Surf Buddy to work closely with each device. This includes reliable session tracking on Apple Watch, integration with Apple Health, maps and notifications, and an interface designed specifically for each screen. The result is a more integrated and responsive experience that feels at home on Apple devices.

Surf Buddy is based on years of software-development and user-experience work, together with knowledge and feedback from windsurfers and professionals. Every feature is deliberately designed, implemented and reviewed; the app is not assembled from unverified AI-generated code.

Building Surf Buddy as an independent project requires far more time than would make sense as a quick commercial exercise. That effort is possible because we care about windsurfing, believe in the idea and want to create the app we have been missing ourselves.

Sessions

Devices & tracking

Will Surf Buddy be available for Android?

Development currently focuses on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. These are the platforms with which we have the most experience, and concentrating on one ecosystem allows us to connect tracking, health data, maps, synchronization and the interface in a coherent way while developing new features efficiently.

An Android version is not ruled out. If Surf Buddy becomes successful and the resources are available, we will evaluate bringing the app to Android. Selected features, including spot guides, leaderboards and upcoming clinics, will also be accessible through the website.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. Surf Buddy includes a dedicated Apple Watch app with a session-tracking experience designed specifically for use on the water, but an Apple Watch is not required.

You will also be able to import GPS files and compatible workouts stored in Apple Health. Apple’s Health app brings fitness information from iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible apps and third-party devices together in one place. You remain in control of which information an app may access. Learn more about Apple Health.

Which GPS watches and trackers will be supported?

Apple Watch is supported directly through the dedicated Surf Buddy watch app. GPS-file imports provide another way to bring sessions into Surf Buddy, regardless of which compatible device recorded them.

We are also working toward support for popular windsurfing GPS watches from Garmin and COROS. Exact models and the data available from each provider will be announced as development progresses. Depending on the source, workouts imported through Apple Health may not include their complete GPS route.

Can I add a session without GPS data?

Yes. You can create sessions manually, allowing you to keep a record of every session, including those you did not track with a watch or another GPS device.

Without recorded GPS data, Surf Buddy cannot calculate route-based information such as speed, distance or most session analyses. You can still document the session with your own notes, photos and videos, making it part of your personal windsurfing journal.

Your data

Privacy & community

Are my sessions private?

Yes. We care deeply about privacy, and sessions will be private by default.

Joining community features such as leaderboards will always be optional. Surf Buddy will clearly explain which information is shared before anything becomes public. You will also be able to deactivate community features at any time and remove the associated public data.

Release

Pricing & availability

How much will Surf Buddy cost?

The core Surf Buddy experience will remain free, without limits on how many sessions you can record or import. We do not want cost to create another barrier to enjoying and progressing in windsurfing.

A small number of specialized features, such as the complete Body & Mind training program for windsurfers, are planned as optional one-time in-app purchases. More information about included features and pricing will be published before release.

Which languages and countries will be supported?

Surf Buddy will initially be available in English and German, with more languages added over time. The app is planned to be available worldwide.

Some content, such as individual training videos, may initially be available only in English or selected languages. Where this applies, Surf Buddy will make it clear within the app.

How can I join the beta?

Sign up for the Surf Buddy newsletter on the homepage if you are interested in testing the app and getting early access. We will let subscribers know when beta testing opens and explain how to take part.

When will Surf Buddy be available?

The first public version of Surf Buddy is planned for 2027. A more precise release date will be announced when development and testing have progressed far enough to provide a reliable timeline.

Until then, some development updates will be shared on Instagram.
